For the past 26 years, Catholic Life Insurance has hosted a “Flag Day Celebration” event at our Home Office Building in San Antonio, Texas, commemorating the U.S. Flag’s birthday. This event is free to the public and promotes patriotism in the community through the celebration of a great American symbol.
More than 200 people came together on Thursday, June 14, 2018 for our 26th annual “Flag Day Celebration,” an event that marked the U.S. Flag’s 241st birthday. It kicked off with a Mass on the grounds celebrated by Fr. Larry Christian, the Vicar General for the Archdiocese of San Antonio. After Mass, everyone gathered on our outdoor pavilion to witness a special tribute and an “old-fashioned flag raising.”
President/CEO J. Michael Belz gave a rich history of the American Flag, the induction of Flag Day as a nationally recognized holiday, and some of our country’s most sacred patriotic traditions. He also gave special recognition to our 2018 Flag Day Children’s Poster Contest winners and our Flag Day Girl Scouts Patch Design Contest winner. There was a brass band playing patriotic music and a beautiful a capella rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.” To conclude the tribute, all of the children were invited to lead the attendees in The Pledge of Allegiance and then everyone enjoyed a picnic of hot dogs and ice cream. There were also free commemorative t-shirts, a balloon artist, and a face painter.
This year marked the 69th anniversary of the Act of Congress establishing June 14 as National Flag Day. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the first United States Flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The festivities are designed to increase awareness of the Flag and to reinforce the principles of liberty and justice as defined in the Pledge of Allegiance.
