Catholic Life Insurance was founded in 1901 when a Roman Catholic priest by the name of Rev. Msgr. Henry Gerlach set out to form a fraternal benefit society in Texas specifically for German Catholic immigrants. Language barriers and unfamiliarity with the new territory made the lives of these immigrants very difficult.
At that time when someone died in their community, the society would raise funds amongst themselves ("pass the hat") for the family left behind. Despite their contributions, however, the death of a breadwinner often meant the break-up of a family. Life insurance, although expensive, offered these families protection and financial security. Thus, Catholic Life Insurance was born.
Assimilation over time led to our organization transforming from a strictly German Catholic organization to a Catholic one, and finally to an organization that welcomes all faiths. Today, approximately 80,000 members turn to us for their life insurance and retirement needs.
