HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE U.S. FLAG!

More than 300 people came together on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 for the 25th annual “Flag Day Celebration” hosted at the Catholic Life Home Office Building in San Antonio. This year marked the U.S. Flag’s 240th birthday.

The event, which is free to the public, began with a Mass on the grounds celebrated by Fr. Larry Christian, the Vicar General for the Archdiocese of San Antonio, and concelebrated by Msgr. Frank Kurzaj. After Mass, everyone gathered on the pavilion to witness a special tribute and an “old-fashioned flag raising.”

President/CEO J. Michael Belz gave a rich history of the American Flag, the induction of Flag Day as a nationally recognized holiday, and some of our country’s most sacred patriotic traditions. He also gave special recognition to our 2017 Flag Day Children’s Poster Content winners and our Flag Day Girl Scouts Patch Design Contest winner. There was a brass band playing patriotic music and an a capella rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.” To conclude the tribute, all of the children were invited to lead the attendees in The Pledge of Allegiance and then everyone enjoyed a picnic of hot dogs and ice cream. There were also free commemorative t-shirts, a balloon artist, and a face painter.

Catholic Life has hosted this event free to the public for the past 25 years in an effort to promote patriotism in the community through the celebration of a great American symbol. This year marks the 68th anniversary of the Act of Congress establishing June 14 as National Flag Day. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the first United States Flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The festivities are designed to increase awareness of the Flag and to reinforce the principles of liberty and justice as defined in the Pledge of Allegiance.

OUR 2017 FLAG DAY CHILDREN'S POSTER CONTEST WAS A SUCCESS!

We invited all children grades K-5th to enter our annual Flag Day Poster Contest. This year's theme was "Stars & Stripes Forever," and we asked participants to show us their favorite person or event in American history depicted in their poster. We received over 800 entries! Twenty-one winners total were selected to receive cash prizes. Thank you to all of the talented young artists who participated, and we hope you will participate again next year if eligible.
