Starting As Catholic Life Insurance prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary, we designate November as “Founders’ Month”—a special time to reflect on our legacy and launch our 125th Anniversary Celebration. This observance expands on the tradition of Founders’ Day, which commemorates the Society’s founding in November 1901, and sets the stage for our quasquicentennial celebration—125 years of unwavering commitment to protecting families and communities.

A LEGACY OF FAITH AND PURPOSE SINCE 1901

Catholic Life Insurance was born out of both necessity and faith. In the mid-1800s, Catholic families— particularly immigrants and workingclass individuals—struggled to find access to affordable financial protection. In response, a group of Catholic laymen gathered in High Hill, Texas, and in November 1901, the State of Texas granted a charter to the Sterbekasse der Deutschen Katholiken von Texas (Death Fund of the German Catholics of Texas).

Leading the founding effort was Rev. Henry Gerlach (1863–1930), ordained into the priesthood in 1886 in Westphalia, Germany. He held the first life insurance certificate issued and is honored as the organization’s principal founder. He was joined by J.C. Dielmann, B.J. Lange, Franz Lange, George Mandry, Wm. Kleypas, John G. Bockholt, Charles Sharke, and Anton Kalich.Their mission was clear: to offer life insurance grounded in Catholic values, centered on moral integrity and compassionate service.

  • In 1936, the organization changed its name to Catholic Life Insurance Union.
  • Decades later, the name was simplified to Catholic Life Insurance, reflecting our expanding reach and modern identity.

What began as a small, faith-driven initiative has grown into a respected institution serving Members in 18 states. Today, we continue the pledge made by our founders—to be there for families in times of greatest need.
